Some years ago, I became aware that I had mostly moved through life reacting to whatever appeared in front of me—without having a firm plan beyond meeting my responsibilities and obligations, unexpected challenges, and the endless demands of everyday living. I reflected on how lucky and blessed I had been, able to cobble such a great life for myself, but wondered what could have been if I had held a true vision for my life.
Would it have been better than living days to weeks, years going through the motions until we find ourselves wondering how we arrived where we are?
I’ve listened to hundreds of interviews with all kinds of people who achieved great success in their life whether through business, entertainment or the arts and there is a common thread. All of these people had a vision — a dream, and perhaps a gift very early in life which became the driver throughout their lives.
I believe this is where having a vision for our life becomes important and why Harnessing Purpose and Vision became book five of the Living Life Unleashed series.
Vision brings us closer to our lives because it helps us live intentionally rather than accidentally. It invites us to become active participants in our journey instead of passive observers.
A vision is not simply a goal.
Goals are destinations. I had goals. I reached goals. But vision is the larger picture. It is the image of the life you want to experience, the person you hope to become, and the values you want to embody along the way. I know that now.
Without vision, it is easy to drift.
With vision, even small choices begin to take on meaning.
Perhaps even more importantly, vision helps you reconnect with yourself.
It encourages you to ask deeper questions:
- What kind of person do I want to be?
- What experiences matter most to me?
- What do I want more of in my life?
- How do I want to feel when I wake up each morning?
- What legacy do I want to leave behind?
Questions like these bring us back into relationship with our own lives.
They help us stop living according to expectations and start living according to purpose.
The Future Influences the Present
One of the most remarkable things about vision is that it begins shaping our lives long before we arrive at our destination. The future we imagine influences the choices we make today. It aligns with us with our purpose.
When we envision a healthier life, we begin making healthier choices.
When we envision deeper relationships, we become more intentional about connection.
When we envision a life filled with purpose, we begin noticing opportunities that align with that purpose.
The opportunities may have always existed, but now we are able to see them because our attention has shifted, our awareness has expanded.
And suddenly life begins responding to the direction we are facing.
Bringing Vision Into Focus: Vision Boards
One of the most popular ways people connect with their vision is through the creation of a vision board.
It is a collection of images, words, quotes, symbols, and reminders that represent the life you hope to create.

Some people include images of travel destinations, dream homes, meaningful relationships, health goals, or creative pursuits.
Others focus less on achievements and more on experiences and feelings. They choose images that represent peace, freedom, confidence, abundance, joy, connection, or personal growth.
There is no right or wrong way to create a vision board.
Its purpose is not perfection.
Its purpose is clarity.
A vision board helps keep your dreams visible when daily life threatens to bury them beneath routines, obligations, and distractions.
Each glance becomes a gentle reminder of what you are moving toward.
Why Vision Boards Work
Some people believe vision boards work because they align our energy with what we desire. Others explain their effectiveness through psychology.
Either way, the outcome is often the same.
What we consistently focus on occupies more space in our awareness.
Researchers call this selective attention. When something becomes important to us, our brains begin noticing opportunities, resources, people, and possibilities connected to it.
The opportunities may have always existed. We simply become better at recognizing them.
A vision board is a tool that we can use to articulate the dreams and it helps us keep our intentions alive in our consciousness.
It brings us back to the grand plan, by reminding us to ask an important question:
“If this vision matters to me, what small step can I take today?”
That is where transformation begins, because it’s not the board itself that creates the change. The vision board creates awareness, it articulates dreams and ideas we have for ourselves that has been living in our heart and soul. Awareness brings these visions to life, through images, words, thoughts and that is the energy of transformation and what creates change.

Vision, Energy, and Becoming
Those who practice intentional living often speak about aligning their energy with what they wish to attract.
Whether you call it visualization, manifestation, focused intention, or the Law of Attraction, the principle remains similar.
What we consistently think about influences how we feel.
How we feel influences how we act.
And how we act influences the life we create.
When we spend time imagining a meaningful future, we begin experiencing some of those emotions in the present.
We feel more hopeful, and optimistic. The more inspired we are, the more willing we are to take action.
In this way, vision is not simply about attracting what you want. It is about becoming the version of yourself who is ready to receive it.
The Real Purpose of Vision
The greatest gift of vision may not be that it changes your future. It may be that it changes your relationship with the present. It supports the intentions you have set for yourself ( book four – Setting Intentions for Change).
When you know what matters to you, your daily choices become more intentional. Your actions become more aligned and your energy becomes more focused.
Your life begins moving in a direction that feels authentic and meaningful.
A vision board hanging on a wall is not a promise of what will happen. It is however, a daily invitation to remember who you are becoming.
Every glance is a reminder:
This life is not happening by accident. I am participating in its creation.
Because we do not move toward what we merely wish for. We move toward what we consistently see, believe, and act upon.
Closing Thought
Perhaps the greatest gift of vision is not that it changes your future. It is that it changes your relationship with the present.
Every moment offers a choice.
Set an intention.
Choose your focus.
Trust the unfolding.
Life responds to the energy you bring to it.
