There’s something about a cranberry cocktail that immediately makes me think of Christmas. Perhaps it’s the beautiful red colour, the tartness of the berries, or the fact that cranberries seem to make their appearance just as we begin thinking about turkey dinners, holiday gatherings, and festive celebrations.
Whatever the reason, this week’s gin adventure has me thinking ahead to the holidays.
And yes, I realize we’re only in October. But Christmas has a way of sneaking up on us!
This Week’s Discovery: The Cranberry Gin Fizz
Still aboard Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas, I decided to venture a little further into the world of gin cocktails.
This week’s experiment was a Cranberry Gin Fizz, made with Hendrick’s gin, cranberry juice, and tonic water.

Now, Hendrick’s is an interesting gin in its own right. Known for its distinctive cucumber and rose botanicals, it has a rather different personality from the more traditional, juniper-forward London dry gins I’ve been exploring.
Paired with cranberry juice and tonic, it makes a refreshing, pretty pink cocktail that looks as though it belongs at a holiday party.
But here’s the thing about experimenting with cocktails. Sometimes you enjoy what’s in front of you while simultaneously imagining how you could make it even better.
And that’s exactly what happened.
A Little Less Ice, Please!
My first observation? Too much ice!
I know, I know. Ice is part of the cocktail experience. But I like to taste what’s in my glass, and as the ice melts, those wonderful flavours become increasingly diluted.
I’d also have preferred a little more cranberry juice. I enjoy a drink with character, something bold enough to make its presence known. Cranberry has that wonderful tartness that makes your taste buds sit up and pay attention.
And I wanted more of it.
The cocktail was pleasant and refreshing, but I think a little extra cranberry would have given it the personality I was looking for.
Of course, that might also depend on the cranberry juice being used. There’s a considerable difference between sweetened cranberry juice cocktail and a more tart cranberry juice.
I’m definitely leaning toward the tart side.
But What If We Added Prosecco?
Now here’s where things get interesting.
What if, instead of tonic water, we topped the gin and cranberry with Prosecco?
Suddenly, our refreshing little gin cocktail becomes something rather more festive.
The bubbles would still be there, but the flavour would change. We’d lose some of the tonic’s characteristic bitterness and introduce the fruity, sparkling qualities of Prosecco.
It might make a lovely holiday welcome drink.
And because I’m discovering that half the fun of gin tasting is imagining the possibilities, I’ve already started planning how I’d serve it.
My Christmas Version
First, I’d use Hendrick’s gin with a generous splash of tart cranberry juice.

I’d go easy on the ice, because I want the flavour to remain bold and refreshing.
Then I’d top it with either tonic water for a more traditional gin experience or Prosecco for a sparkling holiday variation.
But the finishing touches are what would make it special.
A beautiful sprig of fresh rosemary, standing tall in the glass like a miniature Christmas tree, and a few bright red cranberries.

Better yet, I’d freeze those cranberries into ice cubes ahead of time. Imagine how pretty they’d look suspended in clear ice, slowly revealing themselves as the evening progresses.
It’s such a simple little detail, but those are often the things that turn an ordinary drink into something memorable.
And let’s face it, if I’m going to serve a Christmas cocktail, I want it to look like Christmas!
Life, Served Over Ice
One thing I’m discovering through this little gin adventure is that developing a taste for something isn’t necessarily about finding the perfect drink.
It’s about learning what you enjoy.
A little more tartness. A little less dilution. A different mixer. A garnish that adds something unexpected.
What appeals to one person might not appeal to another, and that’s perfectly fine.
There’s something rather satisfying about reaching a point in life where you know what you like, but you’re still curious enough to try something different.
Perhaps that’s true of more than cocktails.
We spend years discovering our preferences, refining our tastes, and becoming comfortable with who we are. But that doesn’t mean we’ve stopped experimenting.
Sometimes all it takes is a small change to make something familiar feel entirely new.
And sometimes that small change is simply a splash of cranberry juice.
Cheers to curiosity, a little holiday inspiration, and finding our own perfect blend.
