My reflections today are inspired by the sentiment in the birthday card my mother gave me.
When I opened this card, I found a simple reminder that lingered long after I had finished reading it. I realized it wasn’t a message meant only for me. It was something worth passing along.
As I wandered the harbour front today, it occurred to me that we all need to be reminded of our worth, and perhaps someone reading this today needs the reminder just as much as I did.
“Just for a moment, stop and think about how special you are. There’s not another you in the world.”
Those words made me pause.
As we move through life, many of us lose sight of what makes us unique. We soften our opinions, hide our quirks, and smooth out the very edges that make us interesting—all in the hope of fitting in, being accepted, or avoiding judgment.
I’ve spent enough years doing that.
Today, I choose differently.
I embrace my quirks because they are part of my story. They are the reason I laugh too loudly, make up songs while I drive, strike up conversations with strangers, share too much, travel solo without hesitation, and find joy in life’s little adventures.
Those aren’t flaws to correct. They’re the fingerprints of who I am.
Today, that meant spending the day exactly as I wanted.
I wandered Halifax’s beautiful harbourfront with no agenda beyond enjoying the moment. I treated myself to perfectly seared scallops and an Aperol Spritz—a little nod to the European vibe I was feeling and my love of lingering over good food and conversation, even when that conversation is simply with myself.
I found a shady spot overlooking the waterfront and happily settled in to one of my favourite pastimes: people-watching. A cruise ship was in port, and that meant couples discovering the city together, children darting from one excitement to the next. Every face held a story, and for a little while I simply enjoyed being part of the scene.

It’s been a busy week and I cancelled my dinner reservations, opting for an early and less formal dinner of refreshing watermelon salad and a delicious lobster roll, before making my way back to the hotel.
It may not sound extraordinary to everyone.
But it felt wonderfully, unapologetically me.
How do we celebrate our uniqueness?
It doesn’t need grand gestures or dramatic declarations. Just giving ourselves permission to spend a day exactly the way our heart wants to spend it.
We stop apologizing for being ourselves.
We wear what makes us smile.
We pursue the interests that light us up, even if no one else understands them.
We stop asking for permission to enjoy life our own way.
We let go of the exhausting job of trying to fit into someone else’s idea of who we should be.
Because the world doesn’t need another copy.
It needs the only version of you that has ever existed.
My birthday card reminded me that there has never been another me, and there never will be. That’s not something to hide. It’s something to celebrate.
As I celebrate another birthday, I also find myself filled with gratitude.
I am grateful for the courage to travel solo and embrace adventures that nourish my soul. I am grateful to have the means to treat myself to experiences that create lasting memories.
But more than anything, I am grateful for the people who walk alongside me—my family, my friends, and all of you who take the time to read my stories, leave encouraging words, and cheer me on.
Your kindness reminds me that while each of us is wonderfully unique, none of us journeys through life entirely alone.
Perhaps that’s the greatest gift of all.

Glad you enjoyed your birthday the way it was meant for you. Nice picture of you.
