Here we are again, on December 1st, connected for the next 24 days by this daily Advent Calendar Blog started three years ago. I am very excited at the prospect of what will transpire from our daily contemplation. I am inspired by the opportunity to rejoice, find gratitude and share a moment with you. I am eager to discover what joyful realizations will come forward as I reflect on personal events that I will want to share with you.
In keeping with past themes such as gratitude, and Christmas traditions, this year, I look forward to exploring the meaning of joy in our lives as I become aware of its continuing presence around us.
That is my intention, every year with this blog. Not only is it an invitation to be mindful and celebrate with me the many blessings of our lives, but it’s wrapped in my desire to bring you little moments of joy as well.
Even when we experience sadness and find ourselves facing adversity, we can also look for joy, present around us. All we need to do is turn our attention to it. How incredible and uplifting is that?!
“Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.”
– Henri Nouwen
Joy is a deep and lasting feeling of happiness and contentment. It often arises from a sense of fulfillment, gratitude, and positive connection with oneself and with others.
It might be surprising to hear someone who’s recently lost a loved one expressing joy. You might think this person is in denial, or unfeeling, when in actuality, he or she is living in gratitude, fulfilled by years of experiencing a deep connection, and fulfillment with their loved one.
In my case, I am reminded everyday of the many instances where acknowledging small blessings and living out some of our lifelong dreams with my recently departed husband brought us closer and it leaves me with a deep feeling of happiness.
Having joy in our lives is important for several reasons:
1. Emotional Well-Being: Joy contributes to positive emotions, reducing stress and promoting mental well-being.
2. Physical Health: It’s linked to lower levels of stress hormones and better overall health.
3. Resilience: Joy helps build resilience, enabling us to cope better with life’s challenges.
4. Improved Relationships: Joyful individuals often foster healthier and more positive connections with others.
5. Productivity: A joyful mindset can enhance focus, creativity, and productivity.
6. Life Satisfaction: Joy adds a sense of fulfillment, making life more meaningful and satisfying.
7. Healthier Lifestyle Choices: People experiencing joy are more likely to engage in activities that promote health.
8. Positive Outlook: Joy cultivates optimism, influencing how we perceive and approach life situations.
Seeking joy is inherent to human nature because it contributes to our overall well-being. The pursuit of joy is often driven by the desire for happiness, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose.
“Joy is not in things; it is in us.”
– Richard Wagner
We have accustomed ourselves to the idea that life is difficult, as we chase the things that will make us happy. We dwell on setbacks, when in reality, our own thoughts and actions will cultivate joy and bring us closer to it, almost instantly sometimes. Follow these three basic principles to bring joy into your focus.
Three Easy Ways to Cultivate Joy
1. Practice Gratitude: Reflect on things you’re thankful for each day.
2. Mindfulness: Be present in the moment, appreciating simple pleasures.
3. Positive Affirmations: Use positive statements to shift your mindset.
Joy will come from our expressions of gratitude. Practicing gratitude will shift your focus from what’s lacking to what we appreciate, and that fosters a positive mindset. Simply shifting your perspective can enhance your overall sense of well-being and contribute to the experience of joy in your daily life.
Take a moment each day to mentally list a few things you are grateful for. This mental exercise encourages you to be present and mindful and will shift your focus toward the positive aspects of your life.
Consider starting a gratitude journal. Writing down what you are grateful for serves as a tangible reminder of positive experiences. Revisiting these entries can reinforce a positive mindset, especially during challenging times.
The act of wishing joy to others is a way to express goodwill and create positive connections with others. I wish you joy, today and always.
