At the beginning of every season, there’s a unique feeling that comes over me, which I affectionally refer to as Seasonal joy. It’s a specific feeling of happiness and contentment that encompasses a combination of childhood memories, traditions, and sensory elements associated with each season. For example, the snow melt in the spring triggers memories of visiting the sugarbush and the cooler evenings of August are reminders that the start of the school year approaches.
“No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn.”
–Hal Borland
Hands down, personally, there is nothing that can compete with the anticipation of another cozy winter of cocooning and all that it conjures up. While friends bemoan the cold weather, and flee south, I start lighting candles, pulling out blankets and settle in for the hibernation.
Of course there’s a driveway to shovel, and ice to scrape of the windshield, but don’t you take pleasure hearing sounds of scraping happening elsewhere down the street and feel connected to that neighbour in that moment?
“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.”
–Anne Bradstreet
Seasonal joy is a recognition and appreciation of the distinctive qualities and pleasures that each season brings. As you savour their unique qualities, you have the opportunity to be present and engaged in the experiences of each season. By being fully mindful, you can appreciate the sights, sounds, and sensations associated with a particular time of year, enhancing your seasonal joy.
When the seasons shift, even the subtle beginning, the scent of a promised change, I feel something stir inside me. Hopefulness? Gratitude? Openness? Whatever it is, it’s welcome.
– Kristin Armstrong
Acknowledging and appreciating the distinct pleasures and beauty of each season will give you a greater sense of gratitude, amplifying the joy experienced during that time.
Seasonal joy often stems from a connection to nature. Nature undergoes spectacular changes with each season, leaving us with awe and appreciation for the cycle of life. Witnessing the beauty of seasonal transformations can bring joy through a connection to the natural world.
Also, nature engages all of our senses, from the crisp air of winter and the vibrant colors of fall. Engaging with these sensory experiences amplifies the joy associated with the season, and deepens our appreciation for the natural elements of each season.
“Winter is not a season, it’s a celebration.”
