As the Voyager of the Seas cuts through the final stretch of water to Port Canaveral, signaling the end of my voyage, the weight of the journey settles in. Knowing that this chapter is drawing to close brings bittersweet feelings of fulfillment and nostalgia. What began as a brave solo expedition, fueled by curiosity and a yearning for the unknown, has transformed into something far greater than I ever anticipated.
New Worlds Unveiled
Every voyage starts with a destination, but the map is never the full story. Along the way, the unexpected unfolded. Portugal and it’s friendly people seduced me out of my sadness and I felt my joy returning. The vast landscapes dotted with unique architectural structures were at times so surreal they seemed to belong to a dream.
“I am one of those who never knows the direction of my journey until I have almost arrived.”
– Anna Louise Strong
We were given an extra day in Barcelona which treated me to a glorious rooftop afternoon, basking in the sunshine over lunch as I got to know two new friends. Such is life when you travel. You have to go with the flow, adapt and flex with the curve balls. It’s a metaphore for life. Those are the moments I cherish most, long after they are over.

Looking back, I am yet again, impressed by how life will bring us new lessons.
Unexpected events teach us to embrace the present moment, to find beauty in uncertainty, and to reframe setbacks as opportunities for learning. Its remarkable how the second part of this journey stands in stark contrast to the uneventful flow of the first leg, transforming the trip into a whirlwind of unexpected challenges.
First, there was a minor delay in leaving, followed by a cascade of disruptions: the devastating floods in Spain forced last-minute changes to our itinerary, then stormy days kept us from safely visiting other ports along the way. Adding to the drama, a rescue at sea unfolded, with the crew racing to assist a distressed vessel—a harrowing yet unforgettable moment of humanity amidst chaos. Still, it all made sense, as if the delays and alterations happened so that we could come to the aid of the stranded sailors in their time of need.
When life throws unexpected events at us, it often becomes our greatest teacher, showing us the value of resilience, adaptability, and perspective. Challenges remind us that we cannot control everything, but we can control how we respond. They push us to grow, finding strength and resourcefulness we didn’t know we possessed.

“Sometimes it’s the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination.”
– Drake
In navigating the unplanned, we discover not only the limits of our endurance but also the depth of our capacity for courage, creativity, and connection. Ultimately, life’s unpredictability reminds us that the journey itself—not the destination—shapes who we are.
These twists and turns, initially seen as interruptions, became treasures that expanded the journey’s scope and etched themselves into memory.
“Old friends anchor us; new friends help us set sail.” — Unknown
Friendships Forged
The voyage wasn’t undertaken alone, and the bonds I formed aboard the ship became its own reward. Strangers who boarded with little more than shared purpose grew into confidants. The friendships continued to grow ashore, each meeting reminding us of the universality of human connection. The trip offered plenty of opportunity to share, and swapping stories and laughter, deepened our connections. Challenges— that tested resolve or decisions brought us closer—cementing those ties further.
I already miss my new friends Carolyn, Chris, ChrisTina, Joanne, Karen, Vicky and Dee, grateful that we will continue to stay in each others lives. All have an open ended invitation to visit my part of the world. It would be a privilege to be their tour guide. I look forward to the plans already underway for a next cruise with Vicky and a visit from Dee, and genealogy assistance from Joan.
I bring back a new card game for my precious friends and family. I can’t wait to share my stories, and souvenirs.
A Book Completed
Before the voyage, the idea of finishing a new book was little more than a distant hope. But the ship’s steady rhythm, the quiet hours between ports, and the endless inspiration of changing horizons turned hope into reality. The story took on new life, influenced by the people met and the landscapes seen. Words poured out, flowing as freely as the sea itself, until the last page was written.
Now, the book holds not only the story conceived before the journey but also the soul of the voyage itself—a tapestry of lessons learned, challenges faced, and the beauty of the world explored, and shared in my blog.
The Legacy of the Journey
As the ship approaches its final dock, there’s a temptation to focus on what’s ending. But the true gift of this voyage is the transformation it brought me. It got me to the end of my year grieving the loss of my husband. New friendships, now anchors of support and joy, remain. The places seen have sparked a deeper curiosity about the world and infused new ideas for projects, books, and undertakings. The completed book is proof that dreams can materialize with patience and persistence.
The end of this voyage is not truly an end but a beginning—a launching point for new adventures, new stories, and new connections. The ship may rest, but the spirit of exploration carries on, endlessly drawn to the horizon.
