People who have researched their family roots often describe the experience as deeply rewarding, emotional, and even transformative.
In an increasingly global and interconnected world, learning about your roots is a journey that can provide a profound sense of identity and connection.
Why Explore Your Roots?
Understanding your ancestry can be a transformative experience. It connects you with your past. When learning about your ancestors’ lives, struggles, and triumphs, you are provided with insight into your own history.
Our family recently completed seven generations of genealogical research and the findings ignited greater curiosity about my family history. We documented as much of our family traditions and stories as we could to keep them alive for future generations.
I need to know more about our ethnic background, and why my ancestors decided to come to North America to make a new life. It’s also a great opportunity to build connection, and possibly reach out to distant relatives through shared family trees.

During my recent travels, I met Joan, who shared my interest in genealogy and had looked into her own DNA testing and matching to discover a number of hidden relatives.
Upon her recommendation, I registered with Ancestry.com since it is one of the leading platforms helping people uncover their family history and genealogical ties and received my DNA kit today. (There are other platforms you can look into, including 23andMe, Findmypast, FamilySearch etc,)
Whether you’re a curious beginner like me or an experienced family historian, these platforms offer powerful tools to make the search for your heritage engaging and enlightening.
What Will It Bring?

1. A Sense of Identity – Many express how learning about their ancestors helps them feel more grounded and connected to their heritage. Discovering cultural or ethnic origins often provides a stronger sense of belonging to a broader community.
“I didn’t realize how much my great-grandparents struggled to immigrate and build a life here. It made me proud of where I come from.”
2. Emotional Discoveries – Finding records, photos, or stories of ancestors can evoke strong emotions, especially when learning about hardships, triumphs, or family traditions. Many find it touching to uncover relatives they never knew existed, or to solve family mysteries.
3. A Deeper Appreciation for Family – Researching family roots often fosters a greater appreciation for the sacrifices and resilience of ancestors.
4. Excitement of Discovery – Many describe the process as a thrilling puzzle, with each new discovery adding another piece to the family story. It may not happen frequently, but unearthing unexpected connections or distant relatives can feel like a major achievement.

5. Healing and Closure – For some, researching family roots helps answer long-standing questions or fill gaps in their identity. Learning about ancestors’ challenges can also provide a sense of perspective and resilience.
“Knowing my ancestors survived war and poverty gives me strength in my own challenges.”
Challenges Along the Way
While rewarding, people also note that researching family history can be time-consuming and occasionally frustrating, especially when records are missing or family stories conflict. However, these obstacles often make the discoveries even more meaningful when breakthroughs happen.
Overall, those who research their family roots often describe it as a journey of self-discovery and connection, helping them better understand where they come from and how their family’s story fits into the larger tapestry of history.
Getting Started

Building your family tree, even starting with what you know—names, dates, and locations of close relatives is overwhelming. My father is one of 8 siblings, and my mother is 1 of fifteen children. This is a lot of detail and information to enter! The platform will do a lot of the work for me….using this information to search billions of records, including birth certificates, marriage licenses, immigration documents, and census data.
The next step is searching through those family history records. Joan explained that Ancestry.com has one of the largest collections of digitized records globally, making it easy to trace your lineage back several generations. Key databases include military records, newspapers, and even criminal records. I may not know how to interpret these records, but Joan and I have already agreed to collaborate, so she can help me. I will even visit her in Arizona if needed.
I am ready to submit my DNA testing. AncestryDNA, the company’s genetic testing service, provides a detailed breakdown of your ethnic origins and identifies genetic relatives. I am really excited about this. My feeling is that my heritage is entirely French European, but who knows?
This is a powerful way to uncover unknown family connections or validate oral histories. It took me a long time to be comfortable with the idea, but I am ready now.
Eventually, Collaborate with Others
It may take a while for me to connect with relatives and compare notes, and seek out distant relations through shared family trees or join community forums to exchange information and tips. I wonder if the platform also suggests possible connections based on common ancestors.
After sharing with Joan how I saw genealogical research as monumental, she gave me a few tips not to get overwhelmed and to maximize my experience.
- Be patient. Genealogy research can take time. Explore different record collections and revisit them as new data is added.
- Verify Sources. Cross-check information from multiple sources to ensure accuracy.
- Use the Hints Feature provided by Ancestry.com They can guide me to relevant documents and records related to your ancestors.
- Explore All Features and not limit myself to just family trees—but do dive into the rich stories behind historical records.
This is going to be a very long-term project. I am taking the first step today, and hopefully will uncover a connection, a story, or a legacy that changes my story forever.
