Our world is demanding, and our days can be difficult. When I ride the elevator with someone, or stand in line at the check out counter, I have no idea what the person next to me is going through. In that moment however, I am sharing space with another human being, and I have the ability to contribute positively to their day just by smiling, and being kind.
In the last month, I have been blessed with kindness from so many people, kind supportive words, heartfelt expressions of sympathy, a phone call or text to see how I am doing, food dropped off to ease my day, invitations to visit or chat over coffee and every gesture has been appreciated and made my day easier to get through. In turn, feeling blessed and loved made it easy for me to see beyond my grief and feel compassion for others around me.
That’s the magic of kindness. Kindness is more than a gesture; it is a transformative force that has the power to bridge gaps, heal wounds, and create a sense of unity. In a society where political, cultural and social views can be divisive, kindness acts as a common language that crosses any barrier.
There’s a unique joy that comes from giving selflessly to others. An altruistic joy arises when individuals prioritize the well-being of others, fostering a sense of happiness that goes beyond personal gains.
Thats because kindness creates a positive feedback loop, feeding both the giver and the recipient with feelings of joy. Whether it’s small daily acts of kindness or more significant gestures, both will contribute to a more joyful and compassionate world.
“When you are kind to others, it not only changes you, it changes the world.”
— Harold Kushner
I get it! The beauty of kindness is in its accessibility! Every individual possesses the capacity to be kind, and the potential for positive impact is limitless.
Small acts of kindness, whether a friendly smile, a helping hand, or a thoughtful word, have the ability to create ripples of positivity that extend far beyond the immediate moment.
One of the remarkable aspects of kindness is its ability to become reciprocal. When one person extends kindness, it often inspires a chain reaction, encouraging others to pay it forward. This ripple effect, starts small on an individual level, impacting your neighbour, but the wave has the potential to keep going, contributing to the collective well-being of your community and, by extension, the world.
“The simplest acts of kindness are by far more powerful than a thousand heads bowing in prayer.”
― Mahatma Gandhi
By fostering a culture of kindness, we not only contribute to the well-being of those around us but also sow the seeds for a more harmonious and interconnected world.
Kindness fosters a sense of empathy and understanding. It prompts us to step into the shoes of others, if only for a moment, and recognize our shared humanity. In a world grappling with challenges ranging from social inequalities to environmental issues, cultivating empathy through acts of kindness becomes critical if we want to foster solutions for a global shift towards kindness.
“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”
― Dalai Lama
Kindness is not merely a nicety, it’s become a necessity. In a world hungry for compassion and understanding, each act of kindness becomes a building block toward a more harmonious global community. You and I, as individuals, can help create a world where kindness is not only valued but celebrated as a powerful catalyst for positive change.
“Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.”
― Lao-Tzu
As we approach the start of a new year, i am joining with others to answer the call for more kindness. After all, it starts with each of us making a conscious choice to infuse our daily interactions with compassion and empathy.
It starts with me…. and you.
