Some days begin just like any other—ordinary and somewhat predictable, marked by routine and familiar surroundings. But every once in a while, the unexpected happens, breaking through the monotony like a burst of sunlight through storm clouds.
On such days, a single event can shift the ordinary into the extraordinary, filling the air with a sense of wonder and leaving you questioning whether what you just witnessed was real or a fleeting dream. It’s the kind of moment that lingers in your heart, reminding you that miracles can unfold even in the most unassuming corners of life.
Today, was a miraculous day.
The sun had not yet set as we were making our way to the dining room for the early seating. I was stepping off the elevator and one of my ship mates pointed to a crowd that was gathering port side, looking out at the ocean.
The Captain’s voice came over the intercom, calling the crew into action and informing us that we would be turning around to assist a sailboat in distress. Eyes turned to the horizon, where a tiny, mastless vessel bobbed helplessly on the stormy seas.

As the cruise ship slowed and the crew deployed a rescue boat, passengers leaned over the railings, breath held, cameras at the ready, watching with a mix of tension and awe as the staff worked swiftly to save a young family adrift and desperate for help.

They made two runs, first to scoop the family, and then went back for the dog.

Some forty-five minutes later, the young family (2 adults, 2 toddlerswere safely on board and we were left with an unforgettable testament to courage, humanity, and hope on the open sea.

Did we feel like the Universe had conspired to put us on the path of this sailboat?
You tell me. Here are the facts.
- Our ship, the Voyager of the seas, was scheduled to leave Barcelona on Sunday, November 10th, but our departure was delayed by one day.
- As a result of the floods in Valencia, we changed the itinerary and spent the day in port in Palla de Mallorca.
- As a result of the stormy conditions, our stops in Malaga and Madeira were canceled and we headed straight for Gran Canaria.
- We were just off the coast of Morocco, when the ship came across the distressed vessel.
- Had we not experienced these delays, then these itinerary changes, we would not have been in the vicinity of that sailboat today.

I am continually amazed by what feels like the universe “pulling things together”, knowing it’s likely a complex interplay of natural laws, human actions, and the interconnected nature of existence. Nevertheless, whether it is viewed spiritually or scientifically, it underscores how everything in the universe is interconnected and dynamic.
The universe operates on the principle of causality. Every action sets off a chain of reactions. For instance, a small decision or event such as our ship’s itinerary changes, can trigger a series of interconnected outcomes, leading to a larger result.
Synchronicity is when meaningful coincidences seem to align events or opportunities in ways that feel intentional or purposeful. While it might feel mystical, I wonder if it’s not more a result of heightened awareness of connections.
In any event, we were part of a miracle today. We don’t yet know the circumstances that led to this young family being stranded in the middle of the Atlantic, but we know they are safe, and no doubt relieved.
