We have all experienced moments where we find ourselves seized by an occurrence that will stop us in the midst of our busy lives because our attention has been captured. I have been reflecting lately on whether that occurs because we noticed, or because a greater force made it that we would take notice.
Even more so, are those moments more significant because they connect us to others who are having the exact experience as we are, without even being next to us?
And, was that the intention? To have us become conscious that we are connected – to family, to strangers, to other humans, to beasts, and frozen lakes and rivers – sharing the same sky, and the same supernatural event?
Consider last Saturday. Residents in the region were treated to one of the most glorious sunsets we had seen in a while. Anyone living in this part of the world experienced the same spectacular sunset if they looked at the sky.

People reported that it took their breath away, and they took to their phones and cameras to record the event and share it with others. In our family group chat, we each posted a photo of the sunset from our vantage point.

Sunsets captivate us for various reasons. The vibrant colors, shifting hues, and the sense of awe they inspire are often attributed to a combination of atmospheric conditions, such as the scattering of light by particles in the air, which creates the ‘stunning display.
The duration of a sunset varies depending on factors such as location, time of year, and atmospheric conditions. On average, a sunset typically lasts anywhere from a few minutes to around 30 minutes, with the most dramatic colors often appearing in the final moments before the sun disappears below the horizon.

Connected to others
When watching a sunset, we’re connected to others in several ways. Firstly, we may be sharing the experience with friends, family, or strangers nearby, creating a sense of shared awe and appreciation.
Secondly, sunsets are a universal phenomenon experienced by people all over the world, fostering a sense of connection with humanity as a whole.
Additionally, the beauty of the sunset can evoke feelings of empathy and interconnectedness with nature and the broader universe, reminding us of our place in the grand scheme of things.

Experiencing Gratitude
Those moments can have a profound impact on most individuals and leave us in awe, perhaps in self-reflection and hopefully feeling grateful. The more we find those moments ( whether we seek them or they find us) the more attuned we become to the small moments of joy, beauty, and connection that often go unnoticed in our busy lives.
When we are paying attention to what’s happening right now, without getting caught up in thoughts about the past or worries about the future, not only are we in gratitude, but we are in a state of mindfulness.
In essence, gratitude is a natural extension of mindfulness, as both practices involve cultivating awareness, acceptance, and appreciation for the richness of our lives.

Becoming Mindful In that Moment
Mindfulness involves paying attention to the present moment without judgment. Similarly, gratitude encourages us to focus on the blessings and positive aspects of our current experience, fostering a sense of appreciation for what is happening right now.

Practicing mindfulness isn’t just through meditation and sitting quietly. By focusing on something specific like a sunset, you train your mind to be – and stay – in the present moment.
Watching a sunset can be a powerful practice for mindfulness. By focusing your attention on the changing colors, the shifting light, and the sensation of being immersed in the scene, you cultivate a sense of calm and awareness. It helps to quiet the mind and brings a sense of peace, grounding you in the here and now.
It also trains you to be aware that the Universe has captured your attention, and by connecting you to others, perhaps you can tap into a collective energy, that raises your understanding of what we are all doing here.
By practicing mindfulness regularly, you can learn to be more aware of your thoughts and feelings, and develop a greater sense of calm and peace in your daily life

Sunsets evoke emotions and symbolize endings and transitions, making them deeply meaningful to many people. The same can be said for sunrises, where they symbolise a new day, and a fresh beginning.

To bear witness to both, is worthy of intentionally arranging your day so that, maybe once a week, you have the opportunity to gather before the spectacular display of light and colour, and soak up the incredibly powerful vibrations radiating from the Universe, while focused on the gratitude, and the ability to go within, and feel connected to the other humans, animals, oceans, plants, volcanoes that all share this planet.
