Last year, I took a long drive out to a nearby rural area that is rich in lakes and rivers bordered by unspoiled granite terrain, rolling hills, and winding roads, typical of a traditional Canadian environment .
Located at the tip of the Canadian Shield, the landscape can often be rough and unpredictable, but at the same time provides scenic vistas. I was struck by the scenery that passed before me on a grey November day, and a remarkable transformation took place within me.
The fall leaves had all been blown away, leaving patches of evergreen to add colour to an otherwise grey and brown landscape, and the vast expanse of rugged terrain, adorned with ancient rocks and wilderness, brought out a unique sense of joy in me.
How was it possible to feel so uplifted by the sight of these large masses of granite and boulders, and getting a rare glimpse of the actual topography of the area? The raw beauty of this land captivated my senses, and in the midst of its rugged charm, I found an unexpected source of joy.
I wanted to stop the car and point the camera to capture the moments. It seemed every curve in the road revealed one more inspiring view after another.
“We choose to believe that the granite is alive. If life is movement, then rock – with its atoms flying around like stars in cosmos – is alive.”
— Yvon Chouinard
I don’t know if it was the bare solid rock formations now visible without lush greenery to hide it, or the resilient winter vegetation, and the untarnished serenity but the experience allowed me to feel a profound connection to nature, an appreciation for simplicity. The joy that emanated appeared to be coming from the authenticity of the Canadian Shield’s unyielding beauty.
Why am I sharing this with you now?
It occurred to me after reading about the high level of happiness experienced in Nordic countries, that perhaps the environment in which we live can significantly impact our overall well-being and sense of joy.
I recall having the same feeling when I lived for a brief time along the shores of the Atlantic ocean. Everyday, I would take 15 minutes to sit quietly in contemplation, watching the waves roll in, and being mesmerized by the vastness of nature before me. Being aware of how minuscule I was on this planet and part of a greater Universe humbled me, and it felt strangely comforting to understand that there was a much bigger force at work.
“In the face of the brutal elements, we discover that even the harshest environments harbor a unique beauty, waiting to be revealed to those who dare to witness.”

My research provided some perspectives which I am sharing. Specifically, it appears that different types of environments, ranging from harsh landscapes to tropical paradises, can influence our emotions.
Harsh Landscapes and Challenging Climate
• Harsh landscapes, such as deserts or icy terrains, can evoke a sense of resilience in the face of adversity. Facing and overcoming challenges in such environments may lead to a unique kind of joy derived from conquering such adversity.
• In challenging climates, individuals may find joy in simplicity. The starkness of the environment can amplify the beauty of small, ordinary moments, fostering a deep appreciation for the basics of life.
• Some people experience joy in harsh landscapes by connecting with the raw, untouched aspects of nature. The beauty found in rugged terrains can be awe-inspiring and elicit a sense of wonder.
Joy derived from the environment is also subjective and influenced by personal preferences. While some may find joy in the serenity of a snowy landscape, others may thrive in the vibrant energy of a tropical setting.
Tropical Paradises and Extraordinary Natural Elements
• Tropical paradises with lush landscapes, warm beaches, and vibrant flora can create an atmosphere of relaxation. The gentle sounds of waves, the warmth of the sun, and the beauty of the surroundings contribute to a serene joy.
• Extraordinary natural elements, such as lush rainforests or majestic waterfalls, can evoke a profound sense of awe. The diversity and grandeur of these environments oftenq lead to feelings of joy connected to the magnificence of nature.
• The vibrant colors, diverse ecosystems, and thriving life in tropical environments can infuse individuals with a sense of vitality and energy. This lively atmosphere contributes to a joyous and upbeat mood.
• Extraordinary natural elements often inspire joy through their sheer beauty. Whether it’s a breathtaking sunset, unique geological formations, or the colors of coral reefs, the aesthetic appeal of these environments can be emotionally uplifting.
My experience last year allowed me to understand that regardless of our climate, our environment can shape our experiences and emotions in profound ways. Whether facing the challenges of harsh landscapes or reveling in the beauty of tropical paradises, the connection between our surroundings and our sense of joy is complex but undeniable. Understanding and appreciating these influences will enhance our happiness and well-being.
This beautiful planet offers joy through its diverse landscapes, from serene coastlines to majestic mountains, lush forests to expansive deserts. The vibrant tapestry of nature, provides endless opportunities for exploration and appreciation.
Connecting with Earth’s beauty—whether through a sunset or the rhythmic sound of waves—can evoke a profound sense of peace and happiness. These moments of tranquility in natural settings allow us to find inspiration, and become deeply connected to the world around us, and feel a lasting sense of joy.

– Alex Hudley
I am so grateful that exploring the theme of joy has brought me to contemplate life with such diverse perspectives. What I experienced last year, on its own brought me joy. Reflecting on it again this week, allowed me to relive the joy, and it got bigger.
Life is one truly amazing experience!
